System Failure

I just listened to the entire webinar (http://www.cashflowheaven.com/os/debtcrisiswebinar.html) and to be honest all it does is add credence to my opinion which is that due to the global debt situation Capitalism as we know it is dead! What we are looking at is system failure.  The only way to get out of this mess is to stop playing with the ‘Fine Tuning’ dial and change the channel of thinking. I think the governments need to come together and work out a systematic and controlled forgiveness of debt – the same principal as the UN has applied to 3rd world countries. The reason they gave when implementing this was that the years of heavy interest payments has prevented those countries from emerging out of squalor. Billions and billions have been forgiven with the intent of enabling these crippled countries to move them out from under the financial boot of the west – it’s about time the west began applying the same rationale to their own situations.

The system is broke, it is not sustainable and what we are witnessing is the collapse of capitalism and what may emerge is anybody’s guess – my fear is that there will be a lot more pain for all of us to endure and yes – maybe another war – which always seems to result from these financial crisis. The investment industry, to a large degree, involves investment that are either backed or guaranteed by governments. However the governments themselves are now insolvent so where is the security? There is none. I said when Obama got elected that he was America’s last chance of regaining international credibility but he has proved that all politicians simply become part of the system – a system that is corrupt. I continue to move forward with my various initiatives but I do so with one raised eyebrow on the state of the global economy – nothing will surprise me as we move forward.

Royalty Based Venture Financing

Every once in a while, an investment model comes along that turns the innovation community on its head. The venture capital industry, still less than 50 years old, is one example. Now an emerging paradigm called royalty-based financing, applied to early-stage start-ups, may be another. The approach has its roots in the Boston area, and is starting to generate some serious buzz in the Northwest. If you’re a V.C, angel investor, or entrepreneur, it definitely needs to be on your radar.

The concept of royalty-based financing is simple. Instead of buying equity in a young company, an investor agrees to receive a percentage of the company’s monthly revenues—up to a limit of, say, three to five times his or her investment. Instead of waiting five or 10 years for a start-up to go public or get acquired, an investor can start seeing returns almost immediately.

This approach means investors should be able to fund a much wider range of start-ups than just those that typically receive venture backing—the ones that have potential to grow huge, fast. The downside is that your returns are capped, so if you do end up backing the next Google or Amazon, you still only get five times your investment back. Meanwhile, for entrepreneurs, it provides start-up money without having to give up an ownership stake in the company.

Royalty-based financing is not new, but it’s only been in the past few months that investors around Seattle, including the seed-stage fund Founder’s Co-op, have been openly exploring the model. In New England, a few investment firms are actively using it, led by Lexington, MA-based Royalty Capital Management, Wakefield, MA-based BDC Capital, and Portland, ME-based Rock-water Capital. Harvard Business School professor Clay Christensen (of The Innovator’s Dilemma fame) is a supporter of the model, and views it as disruptive to the venture capital industry.

The idea actually dates back to mining companies getting financed to dig for oil, natural gas, and minerals, and government-funded economic development programs. But it is getting renewed interest from VCs and angel investors who increasingly need returns fast, in a tough climate for exits. Indeed, royalty-based venture financing “has the real potential of becoming a major new sector in the private capital market,” says Arthur Fox, the founder of Royalty Capital Management, who first used the approach with start-ups in the early 1990s.

Back then, Fox was an adviser to several start-ups; he’s an MIT alumni and was previously an engineer with HP and Westinghouse before co-founding three tech companies of his own. He first tried out the royalty-based idea as a way to get compensated by the companies he was mentoring, instead of taking some stock. He found that this made them more efficient with his time, plus he would get paid every month. So he decided to try out the strategy as an investor. “It changed everything, because the normal criteria in selecting companies as a venture capitalist, is a high-growth one,” Fox says. “When you invest in a company, buying stock and equity, you have no way of getting out unless they become significantly large enough to have a liquidity event.” With the new approach, he says, “every month you get a check, and it doesn’t matter if they ever have an I.P.O or get bought out.”

An Innovative Marketing Approach

Dear Colleagues,

I have recently had success in conducting corporate partnering activities – a new service offered by me to assist those companies who are on the lookout for new partnering opportunities. We are always looking to connect with like thinking management of companies offering complementary products or services. The intent is to source out these companies, initiate contact with principals, determine their needs, create a possible joint venture scenario, present the idea to both parties, liaise between respective parties and at the right time make the appropriate professional introductions.

A recent example of this is that a client of mine had a portfolio of 115 marketing websites – in the final stages of having the articles upgraded, new affiliate links (4 per page) and a state of the art online management system. He no longer has the time or desire to invest the time to market these sites so he asked me if I had any ideas. I quickly contacted another colleague of mine who owned an online internet marketing and promotions company and asked if he’d be interested in a new marketing initiative.

I then proposed a joint venture between his company and the owner of the portfolio of sales sites whereby the marketing aspect was handled by the internet marketing company. The portfolio owner oversaw the revenues and reported activity and transferred revenues twice monthly by pre-agreed process. In this case – (and in an attempt to put some real value to this service) each web site should be earning $100 per site per month within 90-120 days – that’s $11,500 per month new revenue. Within 8 to 12 months each site should be generating between $400 and $600 per month – that’s $46,000 and $69,000 per month.

Your probably wondering where do I fit in – and rightfully so – I offer 2 alternatives depending on the situation. I am either contracted on a fee for services basis to manage this process on behalf of your company over say a 90-day period.  Alternatively, any 2-way joint venture could be a 3-way joint venture where my reward for creating the business opportunity in the first place is shared equally with the other 2 participants. If anyone out there could use this type of creative and specially focused method of sourcing new business opportunities I’d be pleased to hear from you.
